Writing instructors teach thesis statements to students. However, it has been unclear what determines an effective thesis statement. This research examines several major online writing resources on thesis statements. Several common features of thesis statements are identified, such as location, function, stance, and specificity. Results of such research would have strong practical implications for instructors regarding what to teach about writing a quality thesis statements.
